NASHVILLE, TN () - Teaming with Nike, UniFirst laundered 35,000 pieces of clothing that were donated to destitute Nashville residents following record-setting flooding in that city during May.
"The flood waters directly and indirectly impacted the lives of many of our Team Partners; so we were particularly eager to contribute to the volunteer efforts launched to help those who suddenly found themselves with nothing," said UniFirst General Manager Chris Neeley.
Neeley noted that flash floods at the start of May caught Nashville residents completely off guard. "The Cumberland River, which winds its way through the city, reached 51.9 feet—that's about 12 feet above flood stage and the highest the river has been since 1937."
Fortunately, the Nashville UniFirst facility was spared any damage. Office Administrator Marcia Shaw said an adjoining football field-sized holding pond was able to contain much of the flood waters. "At its height, I believe the pond was about 50 feet deep in its middle and the waters just brushed the edges of our parking lot."
The seriousness of the disaster was underscored by the fact that at least 10 people died in Nashville as a result of the flooding and still another 19 in other parts of the state or in nearby Mississippi and Kentucky.
In addition to donating its laundering services, UniFirst-Nashville also contributed hand sanitizer and latex gloves to flood volunteers.
Lending a helping hand to neighbors is part of our everyday culture, said GM Neeley. "We were glad to help out the residents of Nashville, but it should also be known that our local Team Partners regularly donate their time for various community causes throughout the year."
